Home : Navigate the Health Care System : Find Support Groups and Services
Navigating any health condition can feel overwhelming, frightening and at times isolating. Finding support can be immensely helpful, whether from family, friends or others who have faced similar challenges. There are a large number of resources offering support groups and services. We have referenced a few of the largest and most helpful gateways spanning the range of common and rare conditions (see the Google Support Group Directory, American Self-Help Clearinghouse, MedlinePlus List of Organizations, and the National Organization of Rare Disorders).
There are numerous resources that facilitate online communities to share healthcare information. Some of the largest are: MedHelp, Yahoo! Health Groups, and HealthBoards. While PatientsLikeMe cover a narrower spectrum of conditions (mood and a number of neurologic conditions and HIV/AIDs), it can be very helpful because it provides members support to describe their conditions in great detail.
In addition, you may want to explore some of the most trafficked health-related websites such as WebMD, RevolutionHealth and everydayHealth that offer discussion groups as part of the encyclopedic resources they offer.)
We have also referenced CataList below, a gateway to listservs where you can search for groups on your topic of interest that share information via email.
Remember, going online doesn’t only mean going to the Internet. Most websites provide contact information where you can reach someone by telephone. We have also listed The National Health Information Center (NHIC) resource below which has compiled a database of toll-free numbers for a comprehensive list of organizations providing information and support services.
