Home : Navigate the Health Care System : Be Safe
One of the most important skills to acquire in navigating the healthcare system is recognizing how to do so safely. The importance of this issue was highlighted by the Institute of Medicine in 1999, when they reported as many as 98,000 people die in U.S. hospitals each year as a consequence of medical errors.
It is crucial to be pro-actve in your healthcare (remember: You are the CEO of your health! [link to vision of SuperSmartHealth]). Mistakes can happen at all places in the continuum of healthcare such as doctors offices, hospitals, around surgery, in the pharmacy and at home. Understanding the landscape of error and the steps you can take empowers you to avoid them.
A number of resoures are provided below to support your safety. A good place to start is the Patient Safety section of MedlinePlus. It has links to a couple of excellent “Start Here” resources including Five Steps to Safer Health Care (from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality) and Medical Errors: Tips to Prevent Them (by the American Academy of Family Practice).
In addition to MedlinePlus we have also listed the Joint Commission , the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and the National Patient Safety Foundation as gateways to a comprehensive set of patient safety resources.
