Resources: Evaluating Research

Much of what has been presented around Evaluating Studies and Syntheses has been adapted from the Dr. Daniel Friedland’s book, Evidence-Based Medicine: A Framework for Clinical Practice. Chapters 8, 9 and 10 explain the difference between studies and syntheses and provide more in depth guides for evaluating both. Other appoaches to evaluating research can be found in the online resources below:

• ACP Journal Club Article Selection Criteria
  The American College of Physicians publishes a bimonthly synopsis of articles carefully selected from over 100 key medical journals for health professionals. At this link they’ve published their selection criteria to evaluate various types of studies, including those focusing on treatment or prevention, diagnosis, etiology, prognosis and systematic reviews.

• Information Mastery
  This is a web-based course developed by Mark Ebell, one of the leaders in the field of evidence-based medicine. It provides a tutorial on how to read articles on diagnosis, therapy, and prognosis, as well as overviews and meta-analysis.

• User’s Guides to the Medical Literature
  This is a very comprehensive compilation of critical appraisal guides created by leaders in the field of Evidence-Based Medicine for healthcare professionals. The resource is available to members of the American Medical Association or with a subscription.
